WHAT IS USEFUL

Technology these days is extremely useful to everyone is society and it is being used everyday of the week and 24 hours a day. To me technology is amazing, I use for the whole of my day and cannot remember a day I have gone without it.

First of all, I use my computer 13 hours a day and 7 days a week, I use my phone 4 hours a day and 7 days a week, my whole household use technology for most of the day and it has gotten my household through boring dull days. My computer gives me solutions to problems that normally a professional would answer, my phone gives me hours and hours of social interaction that would require a full day out from 6:30 am to 11 pm. 

Technology advanced to the point where a single USB would hold hundreds of gigabytes if films, music, pictures and now there is something called the cloud which is pretty much a virtual USB that isn't physical at all and I save all my work there and on my USB in case I forget my password.

Technology is very useful to me everyday because I used it to educate myself and help me with my education, it may as well be a full blown library in my bedroom trapped into a small computer, it helps me get information for my homework, it helps me get information for my course work and it also gives me the option to contact my teachers to ask them important questions etc.

WHAT ISN'T USEFUL

Technology is very distracting these days with many entertainment websites like Youtube, Netflix and Hulu, social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and it becomes very distracting to me and many other users who use technology almost everyday.

Technology can also be very dangerous to rely on, many of my USBs have broken with months and months of work on it along with very important coursework that is due the next day, people usually make backups of their work everywhere in the case of a USB breaking. People upload their work to the cloud like Google Drive, Dropbox and people would have multiple USBs that has the same work on each just in case one of them breaks.

Many of my work requires internet to be submitted, Blogger for instance needs an internet connection so my work can be submitted and so my teacher can see it, but if I don't have the internet in my house, then I will have to stay in school late and finish my work, or I can alternatively go to an internet cafe, pay, then upload my work. This becomes very annoying when people have just moved homes and they have to wait a long time for their internet to work. 

Technology these days is very fragile too, I cannot use my phone with wet hands in case it would break, I can't drop my headphones unless they would break, I cannot have my laptop running for a long time otherwise it would overheat and damage it and people rely too much on technology to run their lives and when it malfunctions their lives has a very annoying obstacle in their way.

My first draft

This is is my first draft for the magazine. I had to use a random background image because I haven't taken any photos of my model just yet. I also haven't used any colour because I was just getting the right layout, but I did try and use different fonts that I have downloaded and I also used different typography styles for each headline. The magazine name 'SCHOOLED' is just a temporary name since I don't like it too much and I also have to make a company logo that will go on the bottom right of the magazine replacing the barcode since this magazine will be free. I am thinking of adding social media logos so the reader could interact with the magazine via social media.

So in my next draft I will add:

• Warm colours
• Company logo
• Photo taken by me
• New magazine name
• Social media 

Rough template of magazine cover

This is a rough template I did on paper on how I want the magazine cover to look like. There isn't much detail but it gives me a rough idea. I made this cover after I took the survey results so I can see what people want in this magazine. There will be no bar code because the magazine will be free, it will have cool colours such as blue and green and it will have a comedic personality with a bit of formal writing and informal writing.

These were the results I got back from my questionnaire that I sent to every year group in my year, there were 10 results all together.

To see what people want in a student magazine we decided to make a questionnaire. Three of us went on different spreadsheet websites (Google Forms, SurveyMonkey and Smart Survey) and wrote the same questions. We chose different websites to get more of an accurate answer instead of just getting answers from users who use one website. At this point I should have everything covered and ready to go into the creation of the magazine, but there is a chance I have overlooked something I thought I have done something that I have not done, so this is the Very Last checks and this day will be me structuring the design ready to jump straight into the making of the Magazine and I will plan all the steps I will take in the creation of the magazine.

Analyzing 'Choices' Magazine

This is the magazine am analyzing.

Price of Magazine: Free

Target Audience: Aimed at students aged 16 who are looking for 6^th forms/ A Level courses. It is also aimed at any age above 16 for apprenticeships and other courses.

Purpose of Magazine: Aimed at students or other people looking for a higher education so they can have more doors opened for them so they can proceed to University or possibly a career.

Paper Used: Light gloss, medium thickness paper.

Typeface: Same font used around the front cover excluding the ‘I’ in the name of the magazine. The font is arranged so it is bold one phrase and not bold in the other.

Writing Style: Short words, eye catchy, and enough information to catch the reader’s attention, formal.

Logo: The word ‘CHOICES’ in a bigger font than any other font on the page, the font looks messy and the letter ‘I’ is an arrow pointing upwards to signify the brand making people go succeed higher than others.

Corporate Image: CfBT, trustworthy

Advertisements: Advertising multiple high schools, colleges and 6^th form colleges around London to students in the area and who are looking for such education.

Layout: 20 A4 pages consisting of multiple adverts, 1 every page, and multiple stories, also 1 every page. There is an index page and there is a useful information page. All pages are double sided making the magazine have 40 sides.

Colour: Main colour theme of magazine is an ocean blue along with other shades of blue. The colour inside the magazine depends on the advert and their colour pallet.

Slogan: N/A

Measurements: A4

Reader Interaction: QR scan code, Twitter link and website of magazine.

Images Used: Non copyrighted photo of 5 students of multi-cultural background looking up and smiling to the camera.

This is all I have done so far while learning how to use Adobe InDesign. I am trying to get an exact copy of the Elle magazine and replicate it in InDesign.
