Metal Music Magazine Questionnaire Evaluation

I received the results from my questionnaire and the results came back pleasing. I received 11 responses which is more than enough for a good sample of what my respondents want in a metal music magazine.

First Question

My first question was asking what the gender the recipient is, the results came back with 5 for male, 5 for female and one for unspecified. This shows that there is not much of a gender split in the magazine industry, specifically the metal music magazine industry.

Second Question

My second question asked where the recipient is from, the results came back with 9 people from the UK, 1 person from North America and 1 person from 'Other'. This is expected since the website I posted it on was the UK version so it would show the questionnaire to more people from the UK than people from around the world.

Third Question

My third question was asking if the recipient buys magazines and if they didn't, they could skip the next two questions because this would not apply to them, The results came back with 8 people saying they do buy magazines, and 3 do not. This shows that people still do buy magazines so this would mean that there is a bigger chance of my magazines to be successful since there aren't many metal music magazines that are very popular besides Metal Hammer.

Fourth Question

My fourth question is directed at the people who replied yes to my question prior to this one. I asked how often they buy magazines each month, the results came back as expected. 7 people buy magazines 1-2 magazines each month whilst one recipient buys 3-4 magazines each month. This means that I have to make my magazine stand out to compared to other metal magazines since most of the recipients only buy 1-2,

Fifth Question

My fifth question is still directed at the people who replied to my third question. I asked what was the name of the last magazine they purchased, the results came back with answers, most of my respondents read metal/rock magazines compared to other genres. This is good because this means that my results will have people who are interested in the genre thus giving me more of a meaningful answer The names of the magazines the respondents replied with were Q, Metal Hammer, Kerrang, NME and Classic Pop. Three of those respondents responded with Metal Hammer, two responded with Kerrang and one responded with NME and finally, one responded with Q,

Sixth Question

My sixth question is now aimed at everyone who is doing the survey since this question is not just applied at people who answered question 3.I asked what would they like to see in a metal music magazine, this was a multiple choice that can be answered with more than one box. The answers came back with 9 people picking 'Interviews with band members', 7 people picking 'Exclusive coverage on concerts and upcoming concerts', 8 people picked 'Top ten metal songs of the month or similar' and finally, 8 people picked 'Coverage on upcoming bands'. This shows that I should definitely do interviews with band members and I should also consider doing a top ten list along with coverage of upcoming bands.

Seventh Question

My final question asks what personality would the people want the magazine have, this will define the character of the magazine and the way the articles are written. 4 people said that the magazine should be enthusiastic about the magazine whilst 3 people said that it should be informal, 2 people said it should be comedic and 1 person said it should be formal and 1 person said it should be technical about the music. This means I will have to write the articles with enthusiasm about the genre and how music gets my attention and why this song in particular is good etc.

Conclusion

Overall, the results that came back were great since none of them were unfinished and I could trust the results since most of the people who replied are interested in the genre and have no reason to reply with false intentions and just to ruin my results. I will use this as the foundation of my magazine and how to write my magazine.

I have now uploaded my survey

I have now uploaded my final survey asking the crucial questions that I want to be answered. I made some important questions required to be filled in so the user can finish it, this will give me  a conclusive result that I can trust.

Survey Planning

Survey Planning

I am going to launch a new survey asking what people want in my music magazine. I will have to make it short and efficient because I don't want the participants to get bored half way through the survey which will give me an inconclusive result.

What I want to know:

  • I will need to know what the reader would like to see in a metal magazine, what they want to read about, this is so I can know what to include in the magazine to get the attention of most of my audience.
  • I will need to know the profile the respondents to know who my audience are going to be since I will only know what taste in music they have going into this. This will help me decide what is the average age of my audience and will influence the way the articles are written and language used.
  • How often my audience buy magazines, this will tell how many times to publish my magazine a year in case I should publish it every week like NME or every month like Metal Hammer. I will ask them how often they buy magazines and what was the last magazine they purchase, this will help me get an estimation of what type of magazine house style they would be most familiar with.
  • I will ask what personality would they prefer a metal magazine to have, happy, funny, professional, formal, informal etc.
What I would like to know:

  • I would like know what type of colour scheme/colour pallet the audience would prefer to have in a metal music magazine and how they would like to have the front cover look like.
  • I would like to know what my audience usually associate with metal music, this will give me a good idea on what props and clothing and filters to use for cover photo of the magazine. This will make the magazine stand out and show anyone walking by that this is a metal music magazine.
